How to create a greater impact
One of the unintended byproducts of wealth creation is influence. Why is it that the more money you make, the more influence you typically have?
I break it down into the concept of the circles of influence. We each have a limited amount of influence over societal behaviours. However as we grow our businesses and we impact more people our range of influence expands as well. Much like the ripple effect of a stone being dropped in a pond, the larger the stone, the greater the ripples and the greater the influence of those ripples as it hits the sides of the pond. Therefore the larger the business, the more customers you have, or the more wealth you have to invest in others the bigger the impact you will have as well.
Let’s take a look at the circles
The circles start in the centre, the smallest of the circles where the only person you can truly influence is your own actions. Take a moment to think of someone who is so out of flow they are not even in control of themselves or their own actions. They might be an alcoholic, in which case the alcohol has influence over them, or they might be in jail, in which case the state does. The point I am making here, is it always starts with us. If we cannot be responsible for our own actions or our own ideas, then we cannot expect anyone to listen to us — this is called credibility. You will only ever be able to step out of the first circle if you have credibility and believe in your own message/actions. If you don’t walk the walk you will never be able to take a single step.
The next circle out is once we start to see some success, our families and friend groups take notice. They are influenced by our success. Additionally our customers, our coworkers, our peers are all able to be influenced by our ideas or action and have their lives changed because of it — this second circle is the circle of influence. We can change peoples lives one at a time.
The final circle is the circle of impact. This is when we are able to reach a lot of people at once. Where we can change multiple people’s lives through our ideas or actions. Where other people can take our ideas and change other people’s lives with them and the impact starts to go exponential.
So as you embark on your journey to become a changemaker, just ask yourself which circle are you operating in? Are you holding onto your ideas which means the most you can ever be is influential, or are you sharing a message that everyone can partake in and creating an impact?
